Astronaut Becomes A Father Again - While In Space

Astronaut Randolph Bresnik is a father again after his wife gave birth while he was in space.

Some men will do anything to avoid the birth....

Bresnik's wife Rebecca had their second child, a girl called Abigail, in Houston on Saturday night.

Meanwhile her husband was tinkering about with antennas on the International Space Station during his first ever spacewalk.

I'd have been less than impressed if my husband had told me that's what he'd be doing instead of holding my hand and mopping my brow.

But I suppose Mrs Bresnik knew what she'd signed up for.

Here's the announcement being made over Nasa's airwaves - plus an interview with the couple recorded beforehand.

Mrs Bresnik is a lawyer who specialises in international law at Johnson Space Centre.

Before the birth, she said she was "a little disappointed" her husband would not be there but that she understood.

"We don't choose the timing," she said in an interview broadcast by Nasa following the birth announcement.

"He's trained one year for this mission but really he's been here five, almost six years. I'm just really excited for him and excited for us."

Fortunately both mother and baby are said to be doing well.

Bresnik said: "Very thankful for everyone there at Mission Control and everywhere else at Nasa that's been so supportive and essentially so helpful the last couple days with everything that's been going on."

Mission Control responded with "heartfelt congratulations". "Thanks for recognising the significant accomplishments on Earth that happened while you guys were working hard on your challenging mission in orbit," Mission Control said.

The couple already have a three-year-old son, who they adopted from the Ukraine.

It is only the second time a Nasa astronaut has become a new father while in space. In 2004, space station resident Mike Fincke missed the birth of his second child, also a girl.

So what do you think? Is this a good enough excuse to miss the birth of your child?
