Got A Bald Baby? Buy A Wig!

Just when you thought you'd heard of everything – nipple tassel tops for babies or high heels for three-year-olds – there comes another astonishing fashion accessory for babies. Wigs!

Yes, if you're worried that your little girl was last in the queue when hair was handed out you can now remedy this by buying her a wig.

Apparently, one parent has even commented she got a custom-made wig for her baby because "it's never too early for my baby to start looking glamorous like Beyonce". Good grief.

Blogger Sandra Rose recently posted a story about a 'loyal reader' who sent her photographs of her gorgeous baby girl wearing a lace-front wig made out of human hair.

"I wouldn't be caught dead without my lace-front and my baby won't either," said the anonymous mother. The baby is beautiful but the photos are a bit creepy.

I'm hoping they aren't real and the hair has been photoshopped onto this unsuspecting tot. Not only is it unnecessary and very strange looking but how does the wig stay in place? Does the mother glue it on? And isn't it a choking hazard?

Babies are beautiful enough without any embellishments. And if your little one is bald, well, so what? Their hair will grow and there are, frankly, lots more things to worry about than your child's looks.

There is even a website selling 'fun' baby wigs, from a rasta inspired one to a long, pink wig. The company, Baby Toupee, aims "to bring creative and fun products to market that make parenting a little more fun, all while bringing a smile to the face of their children."

The wigs are aimed at parents of babies aged one to nine months, an age not noted for its well developed sense of humour. Not so much fun for the baby then, more like lots of laughs for the parents.

Of course, wigs for babies have sadly been around for some time. But this is the first time I've ever heard of anyone actually using one on their tot.

As far fetched as a wig-wearing baby may seem, it isn't a million miles away from what A-list actor Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes are doing with their three-year-old Suri.

They are not keeping her out of the limelight but are positively courting it. I'm not an avid reader of celebrity mags but I don't think I've ever seen a photograph of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's children. I can't avoid ones of Suri Cruise and her extensive wardrobe complete with kitten heels.

Perhaps I shouldn't be, but I continue to be shocked by what some people dream up. Is it me, or are we trying to make our children grow up too soon?
