RuPaul’s Drag Race UK competitor Scaredy Kat has responded to critics, after becoming the first “bedroom queen” to take part in the show.
When the 10 queens competing in the first ever British run of Drag Race were confirmed, Scaredy was revealed as the youngest contestant in the show’s history, admitting she has limited experience that mostly consists of experimenting with looks at home.
Her inclusion was particularly controversial for this reason, and while she says she understands why this is the case, it’s also something that doesn’t sound like the criticism is particularly getting her down.
“That’s fine, I can understand why,” she told HuffPost UK when asked about the backlash. “If I’d been doing drag for a long time and them some little twat came on the screen, I’d be fucking angry too.
“But I asked to be on the show, I got chosen to be on the show, and I’m on the show. It’s not my fault. But there you go.”
When asked whether any of her fellow queens had anything to say about making it onto the line-up with such limited experience, she responded: “Probably in confessionals, probably to each other, probably in separate group chats I don’t know about – but not to my face, no. But I guess we’ll find out [when the show debuts]. And that’s fine!”
Scaredy – who is bisexual, and has a girlfriend who is also a drag queen – added that she hoped to encourage other “bedroom queens” to take part in the show in future.
She said: “It’s so cool to be really young and show you can be who you want to be – you don’t have to be gay to be a drag queen, you don’t have to know what the fuck you’re doing, just give it a go and have a good time.
“Drag can be whatever you want it to be, if that’s a £12 dress off eBay, that’s fine. I haven’t got any money!”
Scaredy also revealed she’d love to see women who enjoy drag, like her girlfriend, competing in future seasons of Drag Race, insisting: “Everyone should be on it. Especially in the UK, because the UK has a lot of very diverse people.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK debuts on BBC Three at 8pm on Thursday 3 October.
