#EndSARS is a current social movement against police brutality in Nigeria. The slogan calls for an end to a particular unit in the police force, with a long record of abuses. The protests started in 2017 as a Twitter campaign, using the hashtag to demand the government disband them.
This decade has been defined by social movements. We’ve seen same-sex marriage legalised around the world, Ireland’s abortion referendum, and the introduction of what it means to go viral - while campaigns like Black Lives Matter and Me Too have brought the fight for change to the forefront of the world’s attention.
The history of social movements teaches us that sidelining the most vulnerable constituencies and failing to listen to the voices of diverse survivors impoverishes everyone that it claims to speak for
